Floppy Disk
With the advent of CDRW and removable flash storage devices such as
USB disk drives, the writing may be on the wall for the floppy disk
drive. Still a useful device it will hold only 1.44MB of information
where a flash drive can hold up to 1,000MB and a DVD-RW up to 4.7GB
(4,700MB)

CD ROM / CD-RW / DVD ROM / DVD-RW
These components are quite easily explained.
A CD ROM (Read Only Memory) drive is capable only of reading
information from an audio or data CD, it is not possible to write data
onto a disk with this type of drive.
A CD-RW (CD Re-Writer) drive is capable of both reading and writing
data from/to a CD. It can be used to copy whole CDs or to fill up with
data bit by bit until the disk is full. Once the data is on the CD-R
it cannot be deleted.
However, if you use a CDRW disc instead of purely a CD-R disc, you can
delete data and reuse the disc over and over.
A DVD ROM (Read Only Memory) drive is capable of reading information
from a DVD, be it a movie or a piece of software, it is not possible
to write data onto a disc with this type of drive.
A DVD-RW (DVD Re-Writer) drive is capable of both reading and writing
data from/to a DVD-R. It can be used to copy a whole DVD (movie for
example) or to fill up with data bit by bit until the disk is full.
Once the data is on the DVD-R it cannot be deleted.
However, like the CDRW, if you use a DVD-RW disk instead of purely a
DVD-R disk, you can delete data and reuse the disk over and over.
The DVD-RW drives are a little less standard than CDRW drives though.
There are various types of DVD formats,
